Traces in the Sand Deutsch

Literature

Books and articles about the estate's history and its setting, each in its original language with an English translation beside it. They are not part of the edition: they are what contemporaries and historians wrote about the matters the sources record, and each is introduced with what kind of witness it is.

The English translation was made by Claude, an AI model, and has not been checked against the original as a whole. Quote from the original, and read any passage you rely on there.

A handbook of the procedure for settling boundaries between estates in the Kingdom of Poland, by Marcin Paciorkowski, a sworn sub-delegate of the castle court of Opoczno, who worked such cases. Approved by the censor in 1749; this is the enlarged second edition of 1776, with the laws on boundaries, the law of 1768 among them. It explains the commissions, the boundary chamberlain, the summons, the inspection of the mounds and the decree, step by step, as the practice of the time had them. It does not name Trąbczyn, but it is the procedure of the boundary decrees of 1775 and 1782 between Trąbczyn and its neighbours.

A pamphlet printed without the author's name or place in 1801, later called the "black book", written by the Prussian official Hans von Held against two ministers: Karl Georg von Hoym, who governed Silesia and South Prussia, and the Grand Chancellor Heinrich Julius von Goldbeck. Its matter is the case of the bailiff Früson, who held the lease of the lordship of Krotoszyn and was made to give it up, by a settlement Held says Triebenfeld and Neumann forced on him, and who sued for it in vain for years. It prints the letters and court papers of the case at length, with Held's commentary. Triebenfeld, then a war councillor at Krotoszyn, is named on some fifty pages. It is an accusation, written to bring the ministers down; what it says of Triebenfeld is Held's charge, to be held against the documents.

A journal in occasional parts, published in 1807 under a false imprint by the Prussian official Friedrich von Cölln after Prussia's defeat at Jena and Auerstedt; its pieces attack the Prussian court and army of the years before. The first volume, parts 1 to 3, is here. Part 2 printed the "black register" of the estates given away in South Prussia. In part 3 (pages 129 to 134) Cölln declared that he had not seen part 2 before it was printed, called the register a mixture of truth and lies, and corrected six of its entries, the last of them Triebenfeld's. The Materialien of 1861 says that Cölln printed the register himself, under the mask of a third person. Cölln was a partisan of Minister Hoym and an enemy of Held; what the journal says of either side is a party's word.

Materialien (1861)

Materials for the History of Polish Territories under Prussian Administration. First part: the earlier period down to the Peace of Tilsit, 1807

Language

An anonymous collection, printed at Leipzig in 1861, of extracts from official papers and from the accounts of Prussian officials on the Polish lands Prussia ruled until 1807: the German settlements in the province of Posen, Frederick the Great's and Frederick William II's dealings with Poland, and the estates given away to Prussian favourites. It prints the "black register" (pages 140 to 171), the list of the Crown and church estates of South Prussia given away in 1794 to 1798, from a manuscript found among Hans von Held's papers, with Triebenfeld's entry on pages 162 to 164, and adds as notes the six corrections Cölln printed in 1807. The compiler writes against Prussian rule and says so; the extracts are useful, the judgements are the compiler's.

A study, in six chapters, of the Prussian laws on the peasants of the lands that became the province of Posen: what the peasants owed and held in the last years of Polish rule, the legislation for the Netze district from 1772 and for South Prussia from 1793 to 1806, the peasants' dues and services in both, and the years of the Duchy of Warsaw, 1807 to 1815. Guradze says in his preface that he wrote from the general files of the administration and a selection of the particular ones, tracing how the laws came to be made, and that his judgement differs markedly from that of Professor Knapp of Strasbourg and his students. It is the background to the tenures of the Olęder settlers and the hereditary leases of 1805 and 1806 on the Trąbczyn estate, which it does not name.
