Who runs this site

Traces in the Sand is a private, non-commercial research project run by takaji10. It sells nothing and carries no advertising. Questions about the site, about reusing it, or about your data go to moc.kcud@ijakat.

Reusing the text

The transcriptions, reading texts, English translations, summaries, notes and indexes are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0). You may copy, adapt and republish them, for any purpose, provided you credit this edition, link to the licence and say whether you changed anything. A credit might read:

The documents are more than two hundred years old, and their own words belong to no one. The licence covers what this edition adds: the reading of the manuscripts, the translation and the commentary.

The English translations were made by an AI model (About the edition). Quote the original language for anything that matters.

The software that builds the site, in the project’s repository, is released under the MIT licence.

The page images

The page images are photographs of documents held by the archives below. They are not covered by the CC BY licence. Any rights in them stay with the archive that holds the original, and anyone who wants to reuse an image should ask that archive. If an archive asks for an image to be credited differently, or taken down, that will be done.

Each holding is listed with the form of credit its archive uses.

Privacy

Hosting. The site is hosted on GitHub Pages, a service of GitHub, Inc., in the United States. When you open a page, your browser sends GitHub your IP address and technical details such as your browser and the page you asked for. GitHub uses them to deliver the page and to protect its service, and may keep them in its server logs for a short time. The edition itself receives none of this and keeps no logs. The legal basis is the legitimate interest in running a website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). GitHub takes part in the EU–US Data Privacy Framework; its own terms are in the GitHub Privacy Statement.

No cookies, no tracking. The site sets no cookies, has no analytics and loads nothing from other servers: its fonts, scripts and images all come from the site itself. Your browser’s local storage keeps four choices you make, so the site can remember them: the interface language, how a document is shown, whether the page images are shown, and whether glossary terms are marked. They stay on your device and are never sent anywhere. Clearing your browser’s data for this site removes them.

Links to other sites. The links to OpenStreetMap, the archives and GitHub lead to sites with their own privacy terms. Nothing is sent to them unless you follow the link.

Email. If you write, your address and your message are used only to answer you, and are deleted once the matter is closed.

People in the documents. Everyone named in the documents died long ago. Data protection law protects the living, so it does not cover them.

Your rights. Under the GDPR you may ask what data about you is held, and have it corrected, deleted or restricted; you may object to its use and ask for a copy to take elsewhere. Since the edition itself holds no data about its visitors, a request about server logs goes to GitHub. You may also complain to the data protection authority in your country.

Liability

The transcriptions, translations and commentary are prepared with care, but they contain errors, and no guarantee is given that they are complete or correct. Links to other sites are given for the reader’s convenience. Their content is the responsibility of those who run them, and nothing unlawful was found on them when the link was made; a link that turns out to break the law will be removed as soon as it is reported. Errors, and anything else on this page, can be reported to the address above.
