About this holding
One entry on two pages of the register of the castle court of Konin for 1787 and 1788, kept in the State Archive in Poznań (Archiwum Państwowe w Poznaniu). On 9 June 1788 a servant of Antoni Prusimski brought before the office the cart and animals of one of Stanisław Ścibor Chełmski’s peasants, caught taking timber in the Trąbczyn wood. It is in Latin, with Polish glosses, and is one document.
Historical background
The boundary between Trąbczyn and Łukom had been marked on the ground in December 1782: 53/17/0/-/Konin Gr.153. In the years before, each side had brought the other’s axes, carts and weapons before this office as proof of trespass: 53/17/0/-/Konin Gr.115, 53/17/0/-/Konin Gr.117. This entry shows the same practice six years after the boundary was settled. The wood is now described as belonging to Trąbczyn “and never in any dispute”.
Things taken from a trespasser were shown to the castle office, described in the register, and given back to their owner against a receipt; the entry then served as proof of the trespass.
Contents
Ludwik Żurawski, in Prusimski’s service, presents a cart with unshod front wheels and iron-shod rear wheels, two oxen, one pale and one mottled, a brindled cow and a chestnut mare, the oxen and cow in yokes and the mare in traces. They belong to Marcin Gryndel, a peasant of Łomowo, an estate of Chełmski’s that belongs to Łukom. Gryndel had driven into the pine wood of Trąbczyn and was carting home a felled tree fit for building when the Trąbczyn forest keeper stopped him. The team was driven to Konin and stood before the chancery. Żurawski leaves it there to be given back to Gryndel, who asks for it at once; the receipt was entered the same day [1].
Form and language
The entry stands among others on its pages; the pages are shown whole and the other entries are not transcribed. The clerk describes the cart and the animals in Latin and repeats each description in Polish after “als” or “alias”, so that they could be identified.

How it was prepared
Scans
The folder has two photographs of this book, each showing two facing pages. Each was cut at the fold; the two halves that carry the entry are shown whole. The photographs are from Skanoteka, the scanning project of the Polish genealogical society (skanoteka.genealodzy.pl), and carry its watermark across the middle of the image.
Transcription
The editor transcribed the entry and supplied it by paragraph, with the Latin written out.
Check against the scans
An AI model (Claude) read the entry whole against the scans and corrected eight readings. What Żurawski presents is a “cart”, where the transcription had a participle; the cow’s coat is “mottled”, a word left unread; and the entry ends “he left them and leaves them by these presents”, after a receipt that “sets it out more fully”. Each change is logged with its reason.
Division and dating
The entry is one document, dated by the line “Actum in Conin” above it: 9 June 1788.
Translation
The English is the editor’s own translation and was not made again. It was changed in four places where the text had been corrected.
Summary
The summary was written in German from the Latin and Polish and translated into English. Each of its 4 statements was then checked against the document. All held.
